Charles H. Pearson was one of Australia's more influential thinkers who wrote the famous book National Life and Character in 1893 which had far-reaching effects on Australian society and American society, giving great impetus for both nations to develop racial immigration schemes. Pearson's works were quoted heavily by the first prime minister Edmund Barton when debating the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901.
