C. W. RUSSELL, A.N.A President, Newry, Victoria
The president of the Newry branch, Mr. C. W. Russell, was born at Tangil, and is now in his 35th year. He started working a country general store at the age of 12,and by industry and perseverance worked himself up to a position of trust in the employ of A fessrs. W. Daniel and Co., with whom he was connected for many year.-,.When quite a young man, an opening for a general store at Newry presented itself,and he took advantage of it,with the result that he is now in possession of a flourishing business,and only recently opened a branch shop in the township of Tinamba. He takes a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of his district, is an ardent supporter of sport, and it was largely owing to his efforts that the Maffra cricket and football clubs became so successful. He is only a new member of the A.N.A.,having joined in April,1908,when the branch was opened;he was elected President second half-year,and still holds office.
He was one of the prime movers in establishing the Newry branch,and,under his presidency,it has increased considerably. He instituted rifle matches between sister branches, was the originator of the A.N.A beet-sugar competition, assisted in the starting a gymnasium, under the auspices of the A.N.A., and is always on the lookout for means to improve and educate the younger members of the branch and keep before them the national aspirations of the association.
